Quality Profile
School Improvement Plan
Goal 1: By the end of the 2025-26 school year, 75% of students will meet or exceed the literacy and math benchmark expectations as measured by Standards of Learning (SOL), MAP, and/or VALLSS assessments.
- Strategy 1: Strengthen Tier 1 instruction through increasing rigor and implementing student academic discourse in all subject areas.
- Strategy 2: Reading instruction will align with the Virginia Literacy Act and in part, will focus on decoding words so that they can read multisyllabic words, analyzing word parts, and writing and recognizing words.
- Strategy 3: Classroom activities in mathematics will use a well-chosen set of concrete and semi-concrete representations to support students’ learning and internalizing of mathematical concepts and procedures
- Strategy 4: Teachers will implement Tier 2 research-based interventions for targeted students not meeting grade-level standards as measured by student intervention data.
- Strategy 5: Implement targeted, job-embedded professional development focused on evidence-based literacy instruction ensuring alignment with SOL, MAP, and VALLSS benchmarks. Provide differentiated coaching and instructional support tailored to teacher proficiency levels and student literacy data.
Goal 2: By the end of the 2025-26 school year, WES will meet or exceed the division average for “recommending my school to a friend looking for a new place to work” and “I would recommend my child’s school to a friend looking for a school for their children” on the end-of-year climate survey.
- Strategy 1: All staff will be invited to and participate in monthly events and other staff-sponsored activities to continue to build the culture of our school community.
- Strategy 2: Host family engagement nights to involve family in the school community.
The Mary Muñoz Wing

Our Mary Muñoz Wing was dedicated in the Spring of 2007 to honor the memory of Widewater Teacher, Mary Muñoz. Mary taught in Stafford County for 32 years, 19 of which were in Fourth and Fifth Grades at WES. Mary passed on her passion for teaching to her colleagues and her love of learning to her students. In addition to the Wing dedication, we also wear the old Widewater colors--turquoise, black, and white--on November 14 each year, which we call Muñoz Day.
School Policies
Car Rider
If your child is an everyday car rider, fill out an everyday car rider form, available in the office. If your child normally rides a bus but is occasionally a car rider, send a note on the days they will be a car rider. You will not need to come into the office to sign your child out. You may wait in the car rider line at the end of the building until your child is dismissed to you. If you forget to send a note, call the school. We can put your child on the car rider list. Your child will be dismissed with the car riders at 3:15. Unless there is an emergency, please do not call after 2:30 to change your child's transportation. Finally, if you need to have your child dismissed prior to 2:30, you must sign them out in the office. Send a note in the morning or call the school informing the office and teacher of the early dismissal. The office staff will have your child sent to the office while you are signing your child out. For the safety of all students, children will not be released to parents at the classroom door. When custody papers or special situations exist, the office should be informed and a copy of any official documents should be provided for our files.
Change in Student Transportation
In order to ride a bus other than the one regularly assigned, a child must have written permission from the parent. Send a note specifying which bus, where the child will be going (include a specific address), and what date(s) they will be riding the alternate bus. If a child is riding the bus home with a friend, we must have a note from the parents of both children giving permission. In an emergency situation, a parent may call the school to change bus arrangements. If it is not an emergency, please send a note. Dismissal changes cannot be made after 2:30pm. This allows us enough time to notify your child and their teacher of any changes in their routine.
If a parent wishes to make a permanent bus or bus stop change, they must send a written request to the school. The written request is subject to the approval of the school principal and the transportation department. Bus drivers must receive notification by the school office when approval is given to a student to make a change of this type.
Student Sign-Out
When picking up your child, report to the office to sign them out in the log book. Your child will be called from their classroom to meet you in the office. For the safety of all students, children will not be released to parents at the classroom door. When custody papers or special situations exist, the office should be informed, and a copy of any official documents should be provided for our files.
If you need to pick your child up early, be sure to do so by 2:30 PM. Any pick ups after this time must be via the car rider line.
Visitors and Volunteers
Widewater welcomes visitors to our school. All visitors wishing to enter the school must have a valid picture ID. Visitors will be registered in the office and will receive a VISITOR sticker. When visitors leave the building, they will return their VISITOR sticker to the office and exit through the main office.
If parents wish to visit a child's classroom, contact the teacher or principal to make prior arrangements. Please do not drop in for an impromptu visit as an unexpected visitor distracts both the children and the teachers, and may disrupt the flow of the lesson.
Volunteers are an important part of the programs at Widewater. Without volunteers, we would not be able to offer many of the "extras" which make learning fun for our students. We use volunteers to help in the classrooms, library, and office. Volunteers and mentors provide many of our students with one-on-one and small group tutoring experiences which help to guarantee academic success. If you would like to volunteer, please contact your child's teacher or the front office to offer your services.
Spirit Days
Our Wildcats are asked to show their Widewater Spirit every Friday! We express our Wildcat pride by wearing Gold, Black, Turquoise, and White. GO WILDCATS!

The Widewater Way
